Identity Theft
Have you ever been a victim of identity theft? Such is the title of our new survey. For myself, I have been one time several years ago. One day, I received notification from eBay (or PayPal, can't recall right now) that an account on file had been making purchases and they wanted to alert me. Seems my credit card had fallen into criminal hands, so I quickly called up the credit agencies and issued fraud alerts on my social security number, filed law enforcement reports, and opened up an investigation at my credit issuer. After a month or so the monies were credited back to my account and nothing to my knowledge ever happened again. I was able to act quickly thanks to a brilliant alert sent out by eBay. Of course today there are fake emails galore for many brands, so you must be careful in reading them. Best bet is to always log in to the legit brand site to checkup on your accounts. So have you ever been a victim of ID theft? Answer our survey bottom left corner.

image Stupid Phishers image
Identity Theft
I've been seeing some phish emails lately go from sophisticated to just plain dumb. Here is an example of the email body for a PayPal phish (not modified in any way including formatting). No active hyperlink, and the only URL goes straight to the legit PayPal site. Its almost as if phishers have regressed, or more logically, there are new wannabe criminals who have heard of phishing but don't have the smarts on how to do it (or test it before flooding inboxes).

image Trojan rootkits spread on web to steal data image
Identity Theft
cj writes "Several variants of the Haxdoor family of Trojans are being spread on the internet to try and steal users’ data.

These Trojans use rootkit functions to try and steal confidential user details in order to commit online fraud and identity theft.

A rootkit infection is hidden deep inside a user’s operating system, making it hard to detect without specialist security software. "

Identity Theft
From CastleCops® Staffwriter katiec

Do you have $20 burning a hole in your pocket? Well according to Elane Kovach of Prestige Insurance, the best thing you can do with that money is march on over to your favorite discount or office supply store and buy yourself a basic paper shredder.

“Don’t just tear up those credit card applications and throw them in the trash,” said Kovach, “Thieves can easily tape them back together or at least get the numbers off of them to make a phone call. Instead, be sure to shred any financial or personal correspondence that comes in the mail. You can’t be too careful these days with identity theft on the rise.”
