Running XP Home, SP3 with Comodo firewall. Had been using NAV but uninstalled it and ran Norton Removal Tool before first attempt at installing AVG 8.

Have now tried installing it about a dozen times, including with Comodo turned off (while I was disconnected from internet, of course). I uninstalled Dell Security Center, in case that was a conflict. I've checked the anti-spyware I use, nothing is running automatically or in the background. I tried throwing out the download and re-downloading. Always the same result:

Error 0x80070005

Also, I've been unable to register at AVG free forum. Tried 2x but their confirmation e-mail has never come.

I'd be grateful for help, including suggestions for other good free AV software!

This seems to be a security/permission issue. Do you possibly have any other protection software active?
