This review is for a-squared free version 3.0.
The Security Status page is is well designed. From there you can update,scan now,access the quarantine or Configure a-squared.
Configuration is for updates and permissions of various actions.
The Security Center displays the program version,date of last scan,date of last update,number of detected objects,license type,and number of malware signatures.
It also provides links to a-squared news and more importantly a-squared on-line.The on-line links are for support center,a-squared homepage,security articles and the discussion forum.
There are four choices for scanning;Quick Scan Smart Scan,Deep Scan,and Custom Scan.
Deep Scan is a full scan.Smart Scan is agood and fast result,but only important folders will be scanned.That's the scan I generally use,although I will sometimes use the Deep Scan.Custom Scan offers these options-scan memory for active malware,scan for tracking cookies,spyware traces,use of heuristics,compressed archives,alert riskware,NTFS Alternate Data Streams.You can add or remove folders to be scanned also.
Emsisoft has an active presence in web security forums and support is very good.
With heuristics there can be a concern about false positives.I haven't experienced any with a-squared!
Emsisoft has been upgrading this program quite a bit.Updating is always reliable and trouble-free.
When updating, a-squared lists what is being updated and it's size.The malware sinature is quite large currently at 853,919.
I rate this program very high and I trust it.An excellent free scanner!
